On typing blog posts

18/6/2008 | No comments

I write most of my blog posts with a notebook and pencil. That’s where I note down the initial idea and develop it. The ‘meat’ of the post is usually pretty much done before I go to the computer and try to move the notes into a draft post.

Then things get difficult. There are a lot of distractions on a computer: e‐mail, RSS, clever formatting features—you get the picture.

Well, not any more. I’ve found a brilliant tool for this sort of work, for actually writing at a computer.

It’s a black screen. All it shows is your text. It’s called Dark Room. I’m writing this post in it.

Dark Room has no distractions. It’s fullscreen, so there are no other programs grabbing for your attention. There are no formatting features and nothing to click. Even the mouse pointer disappears. After all, why do you need it? You’re typing, and you use a keyboard for that.

Perfect.

Update: Since switching to Linux full‐time, I now use jDarkRoom instead. It’s very similar to DarkRoom, but being written in Java, it runs cross‐platform.
