Firefox turns 4, hits 20% global share
Mozilla Firefox was released 4 years ago today. Just in time to celebrate, the Mozilla Blog of Metrics has announced that Firefox hit 20% of global browser market share in October. In Europe, Firefox had already passed 30%; in some places (like Indonesia) it’s around 50%.
This level of success is testimony to just how much Firefox has helped change the game for web browsers. Where features like pop-up blocking, integrated search and tabbed browsing (all in Firefox 1.0) were innovative, now they’re ubiquitous. The vibrant add-ons community around Firefox is the envy of all other browser makers. Even Microsoft, who had abandoned browser development after IE6, is back in the game and racing to catch up with IE8.
Firefox isn’t resting on its laurels, either. Version 3.1 is expected early next year, with an array of new features like private browsing, visual tab-switching, and a host of other improvements.
Happy birthday, Firefox—here’s to the next four years!
